Appearance: Colourless, slightly viscous liquid. Slightly soluble in water, in arachis oil and in olive oil,
miscible with acetone, with ethanol (96 per cent) and with glycerol.
Application:
It is gently toxic and widely used in cosmetics.
A common bacteriostatic agent in eye drops
It is used as a bacteriostatic agent at a dosage of 0.5-1.0%;
Generally used for ophthalmic and topical formulations and biological products (vaccines), cosmetics;
It has a narrow antibacterial spectrum and is often combined with other bacteriostatic agents (e.g.
naproxen esters) to obtain a broader spectrum of antibacterial activity.
Storage: Preserve in tight containers, and store in a cool, dry place, protected from light.
