Appearance:
White or almost white powder, or colourless crystals. Freely soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol(96 per cent).
Quality Standard: USP2024; EP11.0
Application:
It can be used as an antioxidant in medicines, food additives, and preservatives in cosmetics.
Application | Dosage/ % | Application |
Injection | 0.001-0.05% | Antioxidant/Stabilizer |
OSD | 0.05-1% | Antioxidant/Stabilizer |
Mesalazine Enemas | 0.1-0.5% | Antioxidant/Stabilizer |
Incompatibility:
Potassium Metabisulfite is incompatible with strong acids, water, and most common metals. It can react with nitrite and sodium nitrate at room temperature, sometimes producing flames; and explosions can occur when there is water; it reacts with acid to escape sulfur dioxide. Potassium Metabisulfite can also fade some colorants and affect the stability of vitamins.
Safety:The dosage as an antioxidant is generally considered safe. Exceeding the recommended dosage may cause skin damage, such as adverse reactions, allergies, and irritation.
Storage:
Potassium Metabisulfite decomposes at temperatures above 150°C. In the air, especially in a humid environment, it is easily oxidized to potassium sulfate. In aqueous solution, Potassium Metabisulfite generates potassium bisulfite, which has a strong reducing ability.
Preserve in well-fitted, tight containers, avoid exposure to excessive heat, protected from light.
